There's a growing word-of-mouth among law stduents and graduates about the law school job boards in certain states. It seems that firms that have politicos as clients, especially firms that do election law, are looking for temps in the next few weeks.
(See, the only job you can do with a law school education but not a license to practice law is to be a law clerk, where you do all the research and write all the motions for the basic parts of a case and the lawyer signs them. Sometimes people get hired as clerks for part-time work while in school, sometimes afterwards.)
In any event, every law school has job boards where firms and solo practioners advertise the jobs. And in states where the elections look to be close, and in states where there's been a lot of early voting via absentee ballot, there's a buzz going on. Firms are hiring more clerks for a temporary period of an indeterminate number of weeks.
This is all word-of-mouth and it may be urban legend, but it is hilarious to me. No matter who wins, the lawyers clean up.
While I can't prove my suspicions, I'd even go so far as to speculate that one of the reasons the outing of gay Republicans struck a raw nerve is because so many non-gay Republicans are also used to life in the closet that they were quick to react to the real reason for the outing: what makes gay Republicans so disgraceful is not their homosexuality, but their Republicanism! While Democrats might have missed it, few Republicans missed the fact that they weren't outed merely for being gay.
Remember, this is how the Democrats view the military: dumb hicks...
And Kerry blames everyone else for his comment (with all cliches in bold):
Senator John Kerry issued the following statement in response to White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, assorted right wing nut-jobs, and right wing talk show hosts desperately distorting Kerry’s comments about President Bush to divert attention from their disastrous record:
“If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they're crazy. This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did (like the Democrats and media attacked those heroes from Vietnam, the Swiftboat Veterans?).
I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh (what's with all these FAT jokes fromt he Dems? Didn't Murtha say the same thing about Rove?), who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease (somehow, not wanting to clone human embryos to harvest stem cells and then be required to destroy the embryo is now "belittling" a man who injected himself and his disease into an election campaign) to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq (NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO WATCH THAT VIDEO ABOVE AGAIN). It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have.
The people who owe our troops an apology are George W. Bush and Dick Cheney who misled America into war and have given us a Katrina foreign policy (!!!) that has betrayed our ideals, killed and maimed our soldiers, and widened the terrorist threat instead of defeating it. These Republicans are afraid to debate veterans who live and breathe the concerns of our troops (who tell stories about how they cut off limbs, cut off heads, blew up bodies, strapped wires to genitals, ravaged the coutryside in a fashion of Gengis Kahn), not the empty slogans of an Administration that sent our brave troops to war without body armor (and he voted against $87 billion to provide that armor).
Bottom line, these Republicans want to debate straw men because they’re afraid to debate real men (like Rush Limbaugh who earned his money vs. a kept Frenchman like Kerry who married his money). And this time it won’t work because we’re going to stay in their face with the truth and deny them even a sliver of light for their distortions. No Democrat will be bullied by an administration that has a cut and run policy in Afghanistan and a stand still and lose strategy in Iraq.”
I don't know if more cliches could fit into so few words...what a bullet we dodged! But we cannot let this man chair any committees!
Remember all that hysteria about how the administration needs to "go it alone" with NoKo and have "unilateral" diplomacy. Well, will they now give Bush credit for holding fast? This development is a win for Japan and SoKo who are our ALIES:
North Korea agreed Tuesday to rejoin six-nation nuclear disarmament talks in a surprise diplomatic breakthrough three weeks after the communist regime conducted its first known atomic test, the Chinese government said.
Chinese, U.S. and North Korean envoys to the negotiations held a day of unpublicized talks in Beijing during which North Korea agreed to return to the larger six-nation talks on its nuclear programs, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
"The three parties agreed to resume the six-party talks at the earliest convenient time," the Chinese statement said.
The agreement is one of the first signs of easing tensions since North Korea conducted the underground detonation on October 9, defying warnings from both the United States and Japan, and its staunchest ally, China.
China is smelling the coffee here. Its economy (and ours) will be in ruins if the Democrats get in control and move to more protectionist, isolationist policies.
Also, check out the picture that CNN chose with this articles. Almost all the protests in SoKo have been against NoKo and Kim Jung Il. They've been burning him in effigy in the street. CNN goes for the anti-American protest:
South Koreans protest against U.S. policy near a U.S. military base in Seoul on Tuesday.
Heather Wilson is one of the seats the Democrats believe they are certain to pick up. Wilson has been tied or down in the polls the last several months.
In the plus column, the Democrat in this race seemed like she didn't want to lie. That's a good trait in any person we want to send to congress. But it really shows that it is not Republican chicanery when we say that Dems will raise taxes.
It's always "projection" with Democrats: they accuse Republicans of doing what they're doing. They talk about Republicans questioning people's patriotism, but the Democrats are the ones running around calling all Republicans "unAmerican." They call Republicans "racists" but they are the ones using all the racial slurs here against Lt. Governor Steele (to include pelting him with Oreo cookies and remarking on his "slavish" devotion to the GOP). They say Republicans are anti-science, but then they support embryonic stem cell research for cures, Darwinism and "global warming" despite science that contradicts all of those assertions.
They also said that Republicans say that God loves them and not the Democrats. They never have, of course, but the Democrats do:
My friend Lincoln Davis who chairs our campaign says there are, there’s one big difference between us and misfortunate Republicans when it comes to our faith: he said that Republicans fear the Lord; he said Democrats fear AND love the Lord. - Harold Ford, Jr. - Democrat
Like many of you, I wish that every Republican politician was a Reagan-type conservative, but if they were, most of them wouldn’t have been elected in the first place. Politics, as somebody probably once said, is the art of the possible. If you crave perfection, I’m afraid you have to wait for Heaven. Here on earth, the best you can hope for are Republican majorities in the House and the Senate. ~ Burt Prelusky, in his Town Hall column today
Algore Watch: Inconvenient Truths from the Pacific
Global warming is all over the media this week to prepare us for all the new "science" we will have to be funding with our tax dollars if the Dems take over:
The former US vice-president will arrive for half a day next month to promote his film on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth. During the 80 minute movie, Gore argues for the need to take immediate action to combat climate change.
The New Zealand Climate Science Coalition does not accept arguments about man-made global warming. Spokesman Owen McShane claims Gore has been liberal with the truth in his film, when he says Pacific Islanders have been evacuated because their islands are drowning.
"There are no such refugees and what's more, the Pacific Islands are not sinking below the waves. It's a very active area. In some islands the sea level is falling and in others it's rising."
So the British hire Algore and say global warming will cost the world up to 20% of GDP:
Unchecked global warming will devastate the global economy on the scale of the world wars and the Great Depression, according to a major British report released Monday that seeks to quantify the costs and benefits of action as well as inaction.
British Treasury chief Gordon Brown, who commissioned the report and who could very well become Britain's next prime minister when Tony Blair steps down next year, said former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, who has dedicated himself to warning about global warming, would advise the British government on climate change.
Introducing the report, Blair said unabated climate change would eventually cost the world between 5 percent and 20 percent of global gross domestic product each year.
Not all of them, of course, but certainly a significant number (especially of those who leave comments here). But they believe…
…that we are losing in Iraq – despite the fact that we have yet to lose one battle.
…that we have accomplished nothing in Iraq – despite the free elections and a ratified constitution in what was only a few short years ago one of the most repressive places on earth.
…that a majority of the American people agree with them – despite how much their political leaders try to hide their agenda. (For example, where is the Democrat Contract With America?)
…that Rush Limbaugh mocked or made a dance making fun of Michael J. Fox – despite video and audio evidence to the contrary.
…that the only source of stem cells is human embryos – when it is not.
...that the only stem cell research that matters is embryonic stem cell research – when it has produced no results to date.
…that the government raising taxes does not harm the economy, that cutting taxes does not stimulate the economy, and that market efficiency does not suffer from age and price controls – despite decades of evidence showing the opposite, not to mention all economic science and common sense.
…that our only reason for going into Iraq was WMD – despite the actual language of the Congressional Resolution.
…that whatever the dinosaur, drive-by media reports is true and unbiased – again despite decades of evidence to the contrary.
…that by virtue of having once worn a uniform you can’t question someone’s patriotism – despite the fact that there was a man named Benedict Arnold who before turning coat did far more for this country that Representative Murtha or Senator Kerry ever did.
…that they can get away with the most vicious lies and slander about the character and motivations of Republicans and political conservatives – but if anyone dishes out a little back to them, they cry and moan and say that won’t talk to you anymore because you are uncivil.
…that the most pampered and sheltered among us (i.e. Hollywood celebrities) are the ones whose opinions are the most reliable and grounded in reality.
…that judges should find liberal policies in words of a statute or constitution that patently don’t mean them – despite a little concept called separation of powers, delegating making law to the elected legislature.
…that a human being with its own unique DNA, that is perfectly healthy, that is performing all life functions, has no right to live if the mother carrying it wants to kill it for elective reasons that have nothing to do with rape, incest, or a health threat – despite all current scientific knowledge about fetal development and in utero behavior.
Now, what’s a word for believing firmly in something that the evidence shows is patently false? What’s a good word, hmmm…
Maybe Democrats can call themselves “the party of imagination.”
An old country preacher had a teenage son, and it was getting time the boy should give some thought to choosing a profession. Like many young men, the boy didn't really know what he wanted to do, and he didn't seem too concerned about it.
One day, while the boy was away at school, his father decided to try an experiment. He went into the boy's room and placed on his study table three objects: a Bible, a silver dollar, and a bottle of whisky.
"I'll just hide behind the door," the old preacher said to himself, "and when he comes home from school this afternoon, I'll see which object he picks up.
If it's the Bible, he's going to be a preacher like me, and what a blessing that would be! If he picks up the dollar, he's going to be a businessman, and that would be okay, too.
But if he picks up the bottle, he's going to be a no-good drunkard, and, Lord, what a shame that would be."
The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son's footsteps as he entered the house whistling and headed for his room. He tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room he spotted the objects on the table. With curiosity in his eye, he walked over to inspect them.
Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. He picked up the silver dollar and dropped it into his pocket. He uncorked the bottle and took a big drink.
"Lord have mercy," the old man whispered, "he's gonna be a Congressman!"
This isn't my blog, but I'd thought I'd let the new readers we've acquired in the last week know what kind of reactions they can expect to get from me, given that I am frequently found more in the comments section than I am posting. These aren't rules for you, they're rules for how I react, just so you aren't surprised.
1) Read. If I post about A, and you jump in with a comment about B, I'm likely not going to respond favorably.
2) Cite. People who make stuff up are delusional. Cite your source. Please. Aside fromt he fact that it lends credibility to your argument, it's a good way to hold me to rule #1, because I'll have to read something before I can respond to you.
3) You get treated like how you treat others. I'm polite in the comments until the other side isn't. To paraphrase Sean Connery from the Untouchables, you pull a knife, and I'll pull a gun. There's been two leftie-loons who have claimed they don't come here anymore because I hurt their feelings, but both of them have a long trail of extreme nastiness. If you're going to dish it out, you'd better learn to take it. As an example, there was one bozo who called himself Democrat, and in one post he opened up the comments with a disgusting self-pleasure reference that I won't repeat, and barely three days later after being repeated challenged to provide a legal basis for a position he complained that his was being insulted and he wasn't going to post anymore.
And finally 4) don't assume that any political group is monolithic. The nice thing about blogs is that they allow for fine detail (when you actually read the post).
Again, you don't have to do any of these things. But if you do follow them and I don't hold up my end of the abrgain, feel free to excoriate me. (Ahem, definition #1, please.)
And if you think I haven’t done this in the past...you know what, I’m not wasting my time arguing about it. I think I’ve held to them, but if you seriously think I haven’t, then we’ll say it’s a bargain from here on out, okay?
Well, they are on Meet the Press and Ben Cardin looks like an ass.
Steele looks so polished. I will keep posting.
"I have a plan." "Have a plan!" That's all Cardin is saying.
Steele says we should take 6 months to evaluate the situation. Oh no! Steele brought up the "Biden Trifurcation Plan!"
Tim Russert no brings up GW Bush and Karl Rove. Steele makes great points about wanting to do something for America.
Cardin says that he's reached across the aisle. Now its Bush agian!
Cardin won't step back from impeachment.
Social security privatization. NSA Wiretaps are illegal.
I don't get this argument that there have been no investigations of the Bush administration.
What was the 9-11 Commission? What were all those commission reports like the Senate Select Committee or the Silverman-Robb report? What about the Kay report on Iraq's wmd?
The Republicans went across the country to investigate the effects of illegal immigration and the Democrats scoffed.
Now it's to embryonic stem cell research. Cardin keeps using the word "discarded" when discussing embryo's.
Steele needs to be more forceful, but he just made a good point about ETHICS versus science.
Abortion: Cardin supports partial birth abortion and he voted against parental notification. Now it goes to SCOTUS nominees. Steele is starting to vascillate back and forth on this. He should have knocked that out of the park.
Steele just slammed NBC for not having an affirmative action program that works.
The debate is now over and Steele ended on a high note by slamming Cardin's tax increase.
I think Tim Russert was more fair in this debate than most. I think it went to Steele, not on substance, but Ben Cardin just looked like a crotchity old man. He looked mean and arrogant. Steele seemed quite approachable and more "every day." I just wished he did a better job on the embryonic stem cell issues and judges. He should have knocked the judges issue out of the park. He didn't even bring up New Jersey's ruling on same-sex "marriage."
Aaron made a fine post here, and unfortunately due to some glitch we can't comment on it. (And yes, that is a photocopy of the actual book, for those in the reality-challenged community who doubt it.)
I personally don't see this as an indictment of Webb (and I'm rooting for Allen). As an author of (with alas only a small percentage of publishing credits under my belt) and a one-time avid reader of (as in before I had kids) fiction, I've written and read worse. Frequently a writer seeks to shock, or if writing from the point of view of the villain, seeks to write the most disgusting material imaginable in order to showcase the villain as truly vile. (Stephen King does an EXCELLENT job of this, particularly in It and Needful Things.)
What this is an indictment of is the Washington Post, and any other media that has consistently been anti-Allen. As Aaron pointed out, the slightest perceived or real misstep by Allen gets page-one scathing treatment, and reports of Webb pointing guns at racial minorities and screaming the n-word gets buried.
If the WaPo was as unbiased and even-handed as they pretend to be, this stuff on Webb would get some similar mention. But it won't. Everyone except the WaPo knows that they are far from unbiased (although perhaps they know it as well).
This is the 2006 version of, "This is a very bad man," when Lynne Cheney went off on John Kerry for using her daughter's sexuality to score political points against President Bush.
Notice when Wolf Blitzer stopped in the middle of his sentence when Lynne Cheney asked where CNN got the footage of the terrorist snipers killing our soldiers (CNN received it directly from the terrorists).
