Democrats Do Not Care about Children - They Care Only About Power
All of this is a political game to them. They do not care about the safety of pages or eithics. The Democrat playbook (leaked like the NIE?) is all we need to see:
1. Pay no heed to the distinction between the e-mails and IMs. There's no evidence (yet) that any Republican leaders knew about Foley's cybersex IMs. There's plenty of evidence that they knew how uncomfortable the "overly friendly" e-mails made at least one page. So the Dems will press the GOP on what they knew about the former and will constantly, in their press releases, refer to the "GOP's knowledge of the sexually explicit e-mails."
2. Enlarge the wedge between House leaders. The tension this weekend between Speaker Dennis Hastert and NRCC chair Tom Reynolds was thick. Dems want it to suffocate the party and throw the Republicans even further off their game.
3. Be aggressive about how Dems will -- and are -- protecting children. Dems want to keep the issue poisonous in a way that's clear and direct to middle America. (In other words: this ain't earmarks.)
4. Choose unimpeachable spokespeople to be their public face. The DCCC has enlisted Patty Wetterling, its candidate for MN 06, to call for "a thorough investigation" of the House leadership over Foley. Wetterling's son, Jacob, was kidnapped in 1989.
5. Deride the Republicans for incompetence. How can you possibly trust them with national security if you can't trust them with your own children?
6. Bring up Terri Schiavo's case and compare the heated GOP attention back then to their allegedly lax attention to the welfare of their pages.
7. Compare what the GOP leadership says about Foley with what Republicans said about Jack Abramoff.
8. Use the Foley cash. Already, the DSCC wonders why George Allen didn't immediately return the Foley. The quotable Phil Singer: “It is more than a little disturbing that Allen apparently sees nothing wrong with holding on to contributions he got from an adult who has been caught sending sexually explicit email to children." Allen and Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM) will return the cash. But the NRCC already spent the $550K and won't.
Just like Cindy Sheehan uses her sons coffin as a soapbox, the Dems will use up this young man and spit him out. It really is just sick.

Watch Jack Murtha (D-Crooksville) Take Bribe!
Ah, yes. The REPUBLICAN ONLY CULTURE OF CORRUPTION continues apace with the release of the 1980 video of Jack Murtha (leftists candidate for House Majority Leader) take bribes! The American Spectator has the video.
Before you watch this, I have a question. Is this legitimate? Or, as Chris stated (and I agree with) is anything that is negative an "ATTACK" coming from a Republican?

Carnival of Coruption: UNLIMITED POWAH!
Well, that REPUBLICAN ONLY CULTURE OF CORRUPTION revealed more of itself today when New Jersey Democrat Senator Bob Menedez had to fire an aide...
U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez's closest political adviser was secretly recorded seven years ago boasting of political power and urging a Hudson county contractor to hire somone as a favor to Menendez, according to a transcript obtained by The Star-Ledger.
I was wondering what all the Cornerites were talking about with "Switcheroo" and then I realized what was about to happen. Just like when they cheated via judicial order replaced Toricelli with Lautenburg, they will use this to demand that a new slimeball be put on the ballot instead of Menendez.

The Democrat Hero's Pollling in MN
Remember Coleen Rowley? She was one of the whistleblowing Women of the Year.
She is a Democrat who was suspiciously portrayed well in the "right-wing hack job" Patt to 9/11.
She is a Daily Kos and Moveon.org and Michael Moore candidate who is going to speak truth to power in Washington, DC.
She seems to be coasting to victory...

READ IT!
Don't you just love how dictatorial, condescending, arrogant and silly the Democrats are? I don't:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said that Osama bin Laden and other 9/11 planners have not yet been brought to justice and Bush should read the intelligence carefully “before giving another misleading speech about progress in the war on terrorism.”
This begs the question...
HAVE YOU READ IT, NANCY?
“The news report on the National Intelligence Estimate is further proof that the war in Iraq is making it harder for America to fight and win the war on terror." House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (who has not read the actual report)
HAS HARRY REID READ IT?

"Once again, the American people have learned that the Bush Administration has not been honest with them about the war in Iraq. Press reports say our nation's intelligence services have confirmed that President Bush's repeated missteps in Iraq and his stubborn refusal to change course have made America less safe. No election-year White House PR campaign can hide this truth." Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (who has not read the actual report)
HAS HOWARD DEAN READ IT?

"An explosive report on the still-classified National Intelligence Estimate states that the "invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks" -- and Republicans have been trying to cover it up." DNC Chairman Howard Dean (who has not read the actual report)
In fact, HAS THE NEW YORK TIMES READ IT?

More than a dozen United States government officials and outside experts were interviewed for this article, and all spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a classified intelligence document. The officials included employees of several government agencies, and both supporters and critics of the Bush administration. All of those interviewed had either seen the final version of the document or participated in the creation of earlier drafts. These officials discussed some of the document’s general conclusions but not details, which remain highly classified. The New York Times (who only heard about what the report said from people who heard what the report said)
So none of the Democrats have read it and yet Nancy is demanding the president read it before he comments, but they will shout from the highest hills and base NATIONAL SECURITY decisions on reports they have not read.
DANGEROUS!

Um, Cantwell Can't pronounce "Nuclear" Either
Everyone makes fun of the way Bush pronounces the word "nuclear."
Why, then, is no one bashing a sitting US Senator for running a campaign ad where she mispronounces it either?
Because she's a Democrat! She's stupid, but just doesn't know any better.

And In Other News, Cindy Sheehan is a Hottie!
Matt Yglesias is usually considered one of the smarter liberal bloggers. Granted, that's not exactly a challenge. But he must have banged his head against a doorway before writing this tripe:
I keep talking about this with people in real life, but it deserves a blog mention as well -- Mahmoun Ahmadinejad has a pretty sweet hipster style. It all starts with a beard not unlike the one I and many of my twentysomething male friends sport. But it goes deeper. The man went without a tie to address the UN General Assembly. And I was in a bar where the TV was showing his interview with Anderson Cooper (it's DC, these things happen) and while there was no sound, he certainly looked witty and charming.
Check out some of the comments on that post as well; it's the old "The enemy of my enemy is my friend," routine. Simply amazing!

MN Democrat's Staff Participated in Hack - a Federal Crime
They illegally obtain credit reports and now they are using illegally obtained login and passwords to view campaign material...it's a third-rate hackery:
Klobuchar is sensitive to crime issues, as violent crime is skyrocketing on her watch in Hennepin County. So she may have been chagrined to learn that a left-wing blogger apparently had hacked into Mark Kennedy's secure server and viewed a prospective Kennedy commercial; that the blogger had passed the login information on to Klobuchar's campaign spokeswoman, Tara McGuinness, last Saturday; that McGuinness watched the illegally-obtained commercial, and then recruited other Klobuchar staffers to view it.
Then again, perhaps Klobuchar wasn't so chagrined. Her office has reported the apparent federal crime to the FBI, and has hung the unnamed blogger and McGuinness out to dry--but only today, four days later, after Klobuchar had completed her scheduled debate with Kennedy, and after the Minneapolis Star Tribune had published a poll that showed her with a big lead.
This just blew up in Chuck Schumer's face.

Wal-mart Fights Back

I wonder how long it will be before Democrats whine and complain about Wal-mart's involvement in the political process not being fair.
Remember, people who Democrats oppose are just supposed to roll over and play dead. If you've been maligned and respond, then you're playing gutter politics of personal destruction when they just want to "stick to the issues."
They should be able to wield any charge and slime any person without any response. Well, Walmart is responding and I hope it is with a whirlwind.

"Finally! This is Long Overdue!": the New Democrat Meme
You can tell they only had a couple of hours to come up with this one: "It's about time." WOW. If this was so important and long overdue, why wasn't this included in the Six for 06 plan unveiled by the Democrats?
The comments from Democrats are really outrageous (especially from John Kerry), but this one stuck out as I read it because it actually didn't sound like a hack criticism, but something that should have been done:
'Had the president not withheld details of the CIA detention and interrogation program from the congressional intelligence committees and instead worked with Congress from day one, I believe we could have created a terrorist detention program after 9/11 that would have been effective in obtaining timely intelligence and withstood legal scrutiny.'
Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV
(D-W.Va.)
The TDP. That sounds like something we should have had in 2002. It should have been done in 2002, but then again, I can understand why it took a few years. Dealing with stateless regimes is difficult and breaks new legal ground. The "withstood legal scrutiny" would have never been accopmlished. Look at the Patriot Act.

Indoctrinate Them Early
Have you seen this book?

Here are some sample phrases, which are accompanied by not-so-subtle illustrations (comments in parentheses mine):
"Democrats make sure we all share our toys, just like Mommy does."
(How many kids hate it when adults tell them to share or else? Oh, the beggar on the bench is a nice touch.)
"Democrats make sure we are all safe, just like Mommy does."
(See the cute little squirrels moving over from the lumbering elephant on the path.)
"Democrats make sure children can go to school, just like Mommy does."
(We see a black graduate in the background.)
I mean, come on. What kid is really interested in whether Mommy is a Democrat (or a Republican, for that matter)? Kids want to hear stories like the Berenstain Bears, which deal with the problems children face on a daily basis, or silly stories like the Captain Underpants series. They couldn't care less about politics at the age when they still want to be read to at bedtime.
Here's a rousing endorsement:
"You're doing heroic work." Bob Fertik, Democrats.com
Heroic? A schmaltzy kids' book that seeks to indocrinate them at a tender age is heroic? What a ridiculous use of the word.

Are you surprised?
The race in CT is looking awfully familiar:
The United States Department of Justice filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz because 85 Town Clerks failed to send absentee ballots to the military and uniformed officers oversees in time for Aug. 8 primary.
In order to see that the voting rights of the men and women serving the United States are not violated, the lawsuit that is being called an "agreement" between the state and federal government, seeks to keep the final ballot count open until Aug. 25.
Bysiewicz said Thursday she sought the help of the feds after her office began to survey the towns and found that about 85 of the 169 municipalities failed to get the ballots out in time.
And then there's this:
Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman, who was locked in a battle with an anti-war challenger in the nation's most closely watched primary race Tuesday, accused his opponent's supporters of hacking his campaign Web site and e-mail system.
Lieberman campaign manager Sean Smith said the campaign has contacted the Connecticut attorney general's office and asked for a criminal investigation by state and federal authorities.
"If Ned Lamont has a backbone in his body, he will call on these people to cease and desist," Smith said.
Lamont, campaigning early Tuesday afternoon in Bridgeport, said he knew nothing about the accusations. "It's just another scurrilous charge," he said.

LLP would like to whole heartedly endorse Senator Joe Lieberman for re-election in Connecticut.
I hate the phrase "Joementum" but he certainly will need some of it to pull off a victory today.
If he loses, he must remain steadfast and run as an independent and the Republicans in that state should support him. Principle over party!

Dems Plan to Have as Many Plans as Possible
Rush read a letter from Mitch McConnell's office yesterday about how the Democrats have tried to have a new plan all year. Then I read this on CNN this morning and cracked up laughing:
Democrats Launch Six for 06 Battle Plan
Party unveils campaign themes, says elections will be about Bush
This might seem like nothing unless, you consider this:

Why listen to the Democrats?

If the Democratic Party wishes to take control of Congress next year, then Democrats need a message that is worth listening to. Alas, they have yet to produce such a message.
This judgment of the Democratic Party isn't mine alone. It is also the judgment of Arianna Huffington.
Here is the beginning of Arianna's post titled "Democratic Messaging: Politically (Ring) Tone Deaf" (link) :
Have you heard about the new cell-phone ring tone that can't be heard by most people over the age of twenty? Originally designed as an ear-splitting way for businesses to drive away unwanted teens without disturbing their older customers, the sonic invention, called the Mosquito, has been flipped on its youthful ear by enterprising youngsters who figured it would be a cool way to contact their friends without their elders -- especially teachers -- being aware of it.Later in her post, Arianna writes,"As for what should be their strongest issue, the ongoing disaster in Iraq, Democrats are still incapable of sounding the right tone. Their all-over-the map messaging certainly isn't ringing any bells or setting voters' hearts to vibrate."
When I heard about this new ring tone that I wouldn't actually be able to hear, it put a bug in my ear, a buzzing that quickly grew more annoying than any mosquito. Or Mosquito. And it had nothing to do with my teenage daughters, and everything to do with what a perfect metaphor this is for the wishy-washy messaging of the Democratic Party. Its leaders have adopted a political tone that can't be heard by a huge segment of the population.
I don't share Arianna's opinion about Iraq or any other issue, but I agree with her assessment of the Democratic Party. I have yet to hear anything coming from the Democratic Party which would convince me that the Democratic Party should take control of Congress.
Granted, I am not very happy with the actions of the Republican Party, but I don't consider the Democratic Party to be a better choice of political parties.

Carnival of Democratic Corruption
Before my power goes out (major storm here in Maryland), we have another chapter in the Carnival of Democratic Corruption--and this touches Mark Warner of VA:
Jerome Armstrong, the political strategist who followed a famous Internet fundraising effort for Howard Dean in 2004 with a book on "people-powered politics," has a sordid past as a shill for a worthless dot-com stock.
Armstrong, 42, touted a dubious Chinese software company, BluePoint, beginning in 1999, without disclosing that he accepted "below-market" shares in exchange for the glowing reports he posted on a site called Raging Bull, according to a 2003 civil suit that named him as a defendant.
"Armstrong posted over 80 times on the BluePoint message board located on the Raging Bull Web site in the first three weeks [it traded]," reads the complaint, filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
At no point in any of the 80 posts did Armstrong disclose he was paid for the service, the suit alleged. In fact, The Post has uncovered hundreds of Armstrong posts from 1999 to 2003, many supporting now virtually or entirely worthless stocks.
Armstrong denied to The Post that he did anything wrong and said the SEC made a mistake in charging him. "This was a long time ago and I settled the case without admitting or denying guilt, and I paid no fine," said Armstrong, who refused to comment further.
Now, two questions:
1. If Dean had become president, would he fire Armstrong?
2. Did Armstrong disclose this incident to Mark Warner? Will Mark Warner fire him?

Democratic Party Nightmare Comes True

Are You Sitting Down?
The Dems ACTUALLY released what they are going to run on and stand for in this election. It's quite hilarious:
Democrats in Congress offer a New Direction, putting the common good of all Americans first for a change, and will:
MAKE HEALTH CARE MORE AFFORDABLE
Fix the prescription drug program by putting people ahead of drug companies and HMOs, eliminating wasteful subsidies, negotiating lower drug prices and ensuring the program works for all seniors; invest in stem cell and other medical research.
READ: Fix the prescription drug program by doubling its cost, halving it's efficiency by removing market incentives and invest in EMBRYONIC stem cell research that destroys life and cured NOTHING; and put doctors out of business while our trial lawyers sue them for every penny.
LOWER GAS PRICES AND ACHIEVE ENERGY INDEPENDENCE
Crack down on price gouging; eliminate billions in subsidies for oil and gas companies and use the savings to provide consumer relief and develop American alternatives, including biofuels; promote energy efficient technology.
READ: Bash gas companies who have been shown not to be gouging; eliminate incentives for domestic production of energy through endless regulations and taxation; cause a gas shortage by capping fuel costs and have press conferences and photo shoots with Hollywood celebrities who drive Priuses.
HELP WORKING FAMILIES
Raise the minimum wage; repeal tax giveaways that encourage companies to move jobs overseas.
READ: create unemployment and put small businesses out of business by raising the minimum wage; repeal tax giveaways to the middle class by trashing Bush's tax cuts for the "rich" (people making more than 40k a year).
CUT COLLEGE COSTS
Make college tuition deductible from taxes; expand Pell grants and cut student loan costs.
READ: Make college tuition deductible from the now higher taxes you pay; hand out free money, ipods and condoms to college freshmen.
ENSURE DIGNIFIED RETIREMENT
Prevent the privatization of Social Security; expand savings incentives; ensure pension fairness.
READ: Bankrupt our economy to buy votes now; confiscate earnings to pay for people's poor decisions; reduce savings and planning incentives by taxing the hell out of estates and investments in the market; ensure pension fairness by allowing our union thugs, er, constituents to negotiate fantastical pensions and then have the American taxpayer foot the bill when the pensions go belly-up.
REQUIRE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Restore the budget discipline of the 1990s that helped eliminate deficits and spur record economic growth.
READ: Restore budget discipline by running away in Iraq; raising taxes; cutting military funding in half; raising taxes; enciting class warfare; raising taxes; creating another economic bubble like the dotcoms; raising taxes; sitting by and allowing scandals like Enron, Worldcom and Tyco to build; raising taxes; mentioning Herbert Hoover as much as possible and, oh and raising taxes.
THE WRONG DIRECTION
The Bush Administration and the Republican Majority in Congress have taken the country in the wrong direction for Americans and their families by:
- Saving our economy from the Kyoto Protocol.
- Saving our economy from the Clinton/dotcom recession by cutting taxes on investment and saving.
- Keeping the economy strong after the Clinton era corruption by Worldcom, Tyco and Enron.
- Keeping the economy strong after 9/11.
- Defeating the Taliban.
- Defeating Iraq's army and taking Baghdad in three weeks.
- Tort reform.
- Capturing Saddam Hussein and killing his evil, demonic sons.
- Putting 2 strict constructionist judges on SCOTUS.
- Reshaping the federal judiciary.
- Defeating al-Zarqawi.
- Five years without a terrorist attack.
- Defeating John Kerry.
- Opening Club Gitmo
- Trying to save social security through sound economic and free market principles
I have to quite my lunch break, please feel free to add to the successes of this administration and congress over the last five years.

Hillary's Smarter than You Think
She's gotta be loving this moment:
A few CODEPINK women did manage to get inside the breakfast, however, as they were legitimate ticket holders. Once inside, the CODEPINK women soon realized that they had been deceived about the second part of the agreement: They would not be allowed to ask the first question, or any question, because Hillary Clinton would not be fielding questions from the audience. “We were really upset that we had been lied to by Take Back America, and that there would be no space at this ‘progressive conference’ to have a dialogue with Hillary Clinton about the most critical issue of our time—the war in Iraq,” said Katie Heald, DC coordinator for CODEPINK. “We got up on our chairs holding up our hands with the peace sign, and were pulled down from the chairs. We tried to take out our banner that said “Listen Hillary: Stop Supporting the War” and it was grabbed from us. And when Hillary started talking about her Iraq strategy, criticizing Bush but not posing a solution, we shouted ‘What are YOU going to do to get us out of Iraq,’ but she ignored us.”
I heard audio of the event, and Hillary stood up against those (like Jean Fraud Kerry) who are calling for a timetable for withdrawal, a position for which she was roundly booed by the "progressives".
And loving every minute of it.
Mahablog detects little interest in a Hillary candidacy:
The MSM has been telling us for years that Hillary is a “rock star” with party activists, but I’m not seeing that here. “She can’t win” seems to be conventional wisdom. Yes, she got an enthusiastic standing ovation at the beginning and ending of her speech, but so did Pelosi and Kerry. And, as I said, the crowd got a lot more fired up by Kerry’s speech than by Clinton’s.
That's of course because Kerry, unlike Clinton, needs the netkooks like Maha on his side if he's going to have any chance at getting the nomination.
MYDD's incredible 12-year-old pundit Matt Stoller sheds some crocodile tears:
That's a big deal. I sympathize deeply with Senator Clinton. She has not lived in the real world since 1993 out of necessity. The vicious smears by the right-wing forced her to build a phalanx of advisors who protect her from feedback. This was necessary, but it carries a severe cost. That cost is that she lives in a bubble. It's a different bubble than that of Bush, but not as different as you might imagine. It is a bubble built of big money donors, right-wing beltway pundits, campaign consultants, and constituency group leaders.
She doesn't get that a fundraiser with Rupert Murdoch, or chastizing young people, or pandering on abortion by pushing Bob Casey, or flag burning, or sticking with Iraq as the right thing to do, or any number of third way moves is not where the country is.
It's not really her fault. She lives in a bubble. Anyone in her position would have to do so, or risk going insane. But it is what it is, and it means that she has exceptionally bad judgment.
We'll see whose judgment is off here. I suspect strongly that it's Stoller's, who appears to still believe that the netkooks have incredible power to win elections; perhaps he has forgotten their support for Howard Dean in 2004?
Update: For a similar take, see Ankle-Biting Pundits.
Say what you will about Hillary Clinton (and Lord knows I have), I have to give her credit for not having the political tin-ear I thought she did when she ran for Senate. Yesterday she continued to show that she has the most sense of any of the 2008 Democrat Presidential wannabes - which is kind of like being the skinniest kid at Fat Camp.

Pot, Meet Kettle
John Fraude Kerry posts over at Airiheadda's:
When I heard on cable television what Ann Coulter wrote and said about the widows of 9/11, my first reaction was pretty much unprintable. I have no apologies for it. Did this woman ever for a second stop and think that these womens' children might be watching TV and have to listen to her venomous words?
Gee, John, did you ever stop and think that the children of the Vietnam Veterans that you slandered might be watching TV and have to listen to your venomous words?
I would like to talk, representing all those veterans, and say that several months ago in Detroit, we had an investigation at which over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command....
They told the stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.
I don't agree with what Coulter said about the women enjoying seeing their husbands die (Correction, as Aaron noted what she said was that the women were enjoying their husbands' deaths; I presume that means after the fact, not during). I do think they are enjoying the celebrity that they've received as a result of being widowed.
But Kerry's got a hell of a lot of nerve getting on the soapbox about slandering people.

Is Hillary Electable?
That's the question raised in this article:
But among those who see themselves as Democratic centrists, especially with roots in the Sun Belt, there is worry her candidacy might be as unsuccessful in November as were those of George McGovern, Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis.
Even though Sen. Clinton has sought to recast herself as a political moderate, the former first lady still has a serious problem in "red state' America," as the new poll results show.
Hillary is definitely electable in my opinion. She needs some luck, like that her husband received in 1992 in spades. I don't think she needs a strong third party showing so much as she needs a weak US economy and continuing high gasoline prices.
More important, the Democrats have to get serious about who is really electable. In 2004, they decided that a foppish liberal senator from Massachusetts was perfect for the role; all he required was another liberal senator from the South to assure people he "felt their pain".
That Kerry had alienated millions of Vietnam veterans by claiming they routinely committed horrific atrocities was considered a mere detail by those convinced that Kerry had the right stuff. After all, hadn't the peace movement won the real battle over Vietnam, the battle for the hearts and minds of Americans?
The writer brings up some good polling issues; most polls show McCain or Giuliani defeating Hillary quite handily, although of course there is some doubt that either of those men will be nominated by the Republicans. But even looking at some of the "nominatable" candidates, Hillary fails to get over the critical 50% barrier.
She's the most likely to get nominated, and she's very likely to get beaten in the general. But it's not going to be a cakewalk for the Republicans, especially if the economy doesn't cooperate.

Racist Candidate for Alabama Atty General
A Democrat, true to democratic roots, is running for Attorney General of Alabama...and denying the holocaust occured.
This is part of an overall pattern:
2. They support Palestinian terrorism.
3. They share their talking points with the terrorist leader of Iran.
4. Their European "allies" bash Jews as Zionists.
5. Support with Oscar nominations, movies based on Jew-self-hatred.

Plan: Bash Bush
Honestly, the idea of San Fran Nan as Speaker of the House gives me nightmares...
Democratic leaders, increasingly confident they will seize control of the House in November, are laying plans for a legislative blitz during their first week in power that would raise the minimum wage, roll back parts of the Republican prescription drug law, implement homeland security measures and reinstate lapsed budget deficit controls.
Translation:
- Raise minimum wage which means increased unemployment and increase demand for illegal labor.
- Roll back parts of the prescription drug law which means stick it to BIG PHARMACEUTICALS (who invest billions of dollars to make life saving medicines for all people).
- Implement homeland security measures which means more pork spending, but no border security fence.
- Reinstate lapsed budget deficit controls which means defund the Iraq war and the military to pay for more entitlement spending.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) said in an interview last week that a Democratic House would launch a series of investigations of the Bush administration, beginning with the White House's first-term energy task force and probably including the use of intelligence in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. Pelosi denied Republican allegations that a Democratic House would move quickly to impeach President Bush. But, she said of the planned investigations, "You never know where it leads to."Translation:
- Screw Supreme Court decisions and all the other investigations that have been completed. We FEEL he's guilty, even though we have no evidence, so let's just GET HIM! That BASTARD!

If Ted & Patrick Kennedy Were Rednecks . . .
One night, Ted and Patrick Kennedy were driving down the road, drinking a couple of beers. The passenger, Patrick, said “Lookey thar up ahead, Pa. It's a po-leece roadblock! We're gonna get busted fer drinkin' these here beers!"
"Don't worry, Son," Ted said. "We'll just pull over and finish drinkin' these beers, peel off the labels and stick 'em on our foreheads, then throw the bottles under the seat."
"What fer?" asked Patrick.
"Just let me do the talkin'" said Ted. They finished their beers, threw the empty bottles under the seat and slapped the labels on their foreheads.
When they reached the roadblock, the sheriff said, "Have you boys been drinking?"
"No sir," said Ted, "we're on the patch."
The preceeding joke is a variation of one that Lynn Waugh (a.k.a. mamalynn) posted on the Beliefnet website.

Democrats Suppressing the Vote
Judge understands the importance of elections and throws the bumbs in jail:
A judge today ignored a plea deal calling for probation and sentenced four Democratic campaign workers to jail terms for their roles in the infamous Election Day 2004 tire slashing caper.
The four - including the sons of U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) and former Acting Mayor Marvin Pratt - pleaded no contest to misdemeanors while an apparently deadlocked jury stalled over felony counts at the end of a January trial that received national coverage.
A fifth Kerry-Edwards staffer accused of crippling Republican vans, Justin Howell, turned down the last-minute deal and was acquitted by the jury.
Now suppose some white Republicans slashed the tires of some GOVT vans that were intended to transport blacks to vote in the South. OH MY! I just became tense thinking about the 18 months of hysteria the media would drum up. There would be news bureaus set up outside the courthouse like a Michael Jackson trial. They'd probably even interrupt soaps to air the trial on the network news. It would be called the "Worst Election Fraud in History" and there would be marches in Selma and Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have relevance again.

Ahab and the White Whale
That's the way I feel about Glenn Greenwald and his obsession with Russ Feingold's Censure Resolution. Today, using his new perch in the HuffPo, Greenwald repeats the usual memes:
1. The President broke the law and there's no need for an investigation.
Under FISA, it is a criminal offense to eavesdrop on Americans without the oversight and approval of the FISA court. Section 1809 of FISA expressly provides that "[a] person is guilty of an offense if he intentionally - (1) engages in electronic surveillance under color of law except as authorized by statute. . . ." And Section 2511(2)(f) provides that FISA "shall be the exclusive means by which electronic surveillance . . . may be conducted." Thus, a person has broken the law if -- as the President admits he did -- he orders eavesdropping on Americans without complying with the warrant requirements of the statute. Period.
Of course, Greenwald completely ignores the argument that the law was not broken, or the argument that Congress cannot limit the powers of the presidency by statute. We all understand that the Congress can pass laws which apply to the president; how many realize that Congress cannot pass laws which apply to the presidency? For example, Congress could not pass a law requiring the President to submit any presidential pardons to them for review, because the powers that the President has in that regard are derived from the Constitution.
2. The censure resolution is popular with the American people. Greenwald claims:
As I have noted many times, public opinion polls have repeatedly shown that pluralities of the public believe that the President broke the law and majorities oppose eavesdropping on American citizens without warrants.
Ah, but the devil is in the details of those public opinion polls. Rasmussen polling reported a few days ago:
Thirty-eight percent (38%) of Americans believe President Bush should be censured for approving the NSA wiretapping program. A Rasmussen Reports survey found that 45% are opposed to the proposal advocated by Senator Russell Feingold.
Thirty-six percent (36%) of Americans say they are more likely to vote for a candidate who believes it is important to censure or impeach the President. Forty-two percent (42%) are less likely to vote for such a candidate.
Now, maybe Greenwald doesn't believe the polling. But the fact remains that Democrats have treated Feingold's censure resolution the way most people treat somebody who passes gas in an elevator; by getting as far from him as is possible. Greenwald recognizes this, but rails that it's completely irrational:
It is critical that Democrats recognize that we are not in 2003 anymore. George Bush is a wildly unpopular President whom the public neither likes nor trusts. The public overwhelmingly believes that the President deliberately made false statements to induce the nation into war and that he cannot be trusted.
Does he really believe that Democrats have somehow missed the dip in Bush's poll numbers?
In an oddball aside, he criticizes Instapundit for recognizing that the antiwar movement has fizzled:
Polls show that the vast majority of the country oppose the war in Iraq and believe it was a mistake. The percentage of Americans who are anti-war has steadily and rapidly increased and continues to rise. But in the starkly delusional and propagandizing mind of the Bush follower, President Bush's war policies enjoy the support of an overwhelming proportion of Americans and only a few enclaves of crazed, marginalized radicals opposes him.
Support for the war has indeed slipped; that this has not translated into support for the antiwar kooks is ignored by Greenwald.
In short, Greenwald, and the other netroots buffoons who are pushing for censure apparently believe that the Democrats are going against their own interests. I'm not always impressed with the professionals in that party, but they're not a bunch of Ahabs, determined to get Moby Dick even if it destroys them in the end.

Liberals Never Fail to Amuse
Jack Klugman pops up in the Huffington Post to plug his new movie, but he also talks a little bit about politics, announcing that he's a lifelong Democrat and wouldn't vote for a Republican. So why does he get a full helping of criticism from the loopy commenters? It's this passage:
We live in a religious country. Get over it. And not only that, but religion is not a superstitious bromide for the ignorant. There is tremendous wisdom, accumulated over centuries of deep thought, in all the major traditions, and all those folks who invest their time and energy in faith are NOT idiots. Why is this a political thought? Because our party has set itself up as the party that's against God, and as long as it does that, we will keep losing power. If we were to do all the same things we're doing now, however, and somehow extend an olive branch to the faithful, we could swing the Washington pendulum hard and fast to our side. Think about it. There are plenty of religious people who respect women's rights and believe in evolution - that's not the point. The point is, as Abraham Lincoln said, "Both sides pray to the same God." God is not a Republican, and it's about time we gave Him equal opportunity on our platform.
Well, you can imagine how that went over with the "reality-based community. They went after Klugman with both barrels:
THE LADY (jack, a transvestite?) doth protest too much", eh?
OF COURSE your religious dogma, just like all others, is EXACTLY superstition, as there is not one shread of evidence to support it: zippo.
FYI, to all the fundies and failed-fundies god does not exist.

I feel that religion is soaked in the blood of millions, though. Every bit of wisdom gained has cost a pound of flesh at least. I think that humans can be self-regulating by applying principles of common good and the golden rule.

Feeling Depressed? Check out the Liberals!
This has not been a great period to be a conservative. The newspapers are filled with dire reports on the president's poll numbers; the Dubai Ports deal, like the Harriet Miers debacle, started in-fighting among the members of the right. And we've even begun to see some conservative pundits beginning to back away from the Iraq War (most notably, William F. Buckley).
But as always, all it takes is a look over at the liberal side to cheer me up. For example, check out the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the HuffPo over the reluctance of Democrats to sign onto Russ Feingold's censure resolution. Here's Ellis Weiner (he's never heard of you, either):
What does this mean to you, the Democrats edging toward the door in flight from Feingold's motion? It means this:
1. Good plays by the rules, within a narrow compass. Evil will do whatever the hell it can think of (and thinks it can get away with) to achieve its ends. In the opera buffa/nightmare that Karl Rove and his goose-stepping Rockettes have made of our politics, you are the Good. Alas. The Republicans are Evil. They have no interest, desire, or (by now) ability to play by the rules. They have been lying, suppressing, intimidating, smearing, and misrepresenting everything in sight since five jokers on the Formerly Supreme Court gave Junior the presidency in what was just the first parade float in an unending cavalcade of hypocrisy that persists to this very day. Therefore, you cannot expect them to 'fess up, be good sports, accept the fact that the ball is going to fall through the hoop, and call Bush to account--in, say, a Judiciary Committee hearing. Why? Because they've been corrupted: by money, by power, by piety, by greed, by self-righteousness, and by ideology, as well as by money and power and money.
David Sirota's so depressed he's reduced to shilling for third parties.
Jane Hamsher (like a lot of liberal bloggers) seems to only get really venomous when talking about Joe Lieberman.
What the hell it is going to take to get them to call Lieberman out for being the coathanger-wielding creep he really is?
(Because Lieberman didn't support forcing Catholic hospitals to provide abortion services for rape victims.)
But as for the Democrats, it's hard to imagine a gap more yawning than the one between the leadership and the citizens.
If you set aside a handful of national figures like Feingold, Murtha, and Gore 2.0, what you hear is timid, fence-straddling, cliche-ridden, condescending rhetoric, focus-grouped to within an inch of its life, and above all designed to appeal mainly to the remaining nine or fourteen or whatever-it-is percent of the country that doesn't care enough about issues to be partisan about them -- partisan in the best sense, meaning take a stand, feel a stake, give a damn. Republican leaders, whatever you might think about them, at least stoke up their base. Democrats treat us like morons, or with egg-coddling caution, as though we'd break under the pressure of straight talk.
So chin up, and put a smile on your face! Remember, we are fortunate indeed in our enemies.

Barone on the Democrats' Chances to Take Back the House
Michael Barone looks at the history:
In this cycle, many reporters have been contemplating the possibility that Democrats will take the House back this November. That's partly because most reporters are Democrats and find that result congenial. More importantly, Democrats can take control with a net gain of only 15 seats this year, while Republicans needed 40 in 1994 (and got 52). It's always easier to see how a party can gain 15 seats than 40 -- although 1994 was the only time in the past 20 years that any party gained more than 10.
Democrats' chances of taking those 15 seats are not very good -- if the voting patterns and political contours that have held steady since the 1995-96 budget showdown continue to prevail. Ordinarily in a decade we see a shift in these patterns. Some geographic regions or demographic groups move to one party or the other, or the whole electorate does.
A lot of Democrats are just assuming that because Bush is unpopular right now, that will give them the boost they need to win. But that ignores that most congressional elections are not won or lost on the basis of national trends, but on the basis of local issues.

Dems Lose Again in Israel
Llama bests Donkey in Israel
Military sources said the Israel Army plans to use llamas for reconnaissance and combat missions in enemy territory, Middle East Newsline reported. They described the llama as ideal for special operations missions in Lebanon against the Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah.
"The llama is a quiet and disciplined animal that can carry huge loads," a military source said. "Vehicles make noise and need roads and fuel. We've tried donkeys and they are not suitable for such missions."
The sources said the army has been training special forces to conduct low-signature ground missions in enemy territory. In January, llamas were employed in a special forces exercise in the Golan Heights.
The exercise employed a scenario in which a special operations unit entered Lebanon or Syria for reconnaissance and sabotage. During the exercise, the llamas carried more than 50 kilograms of equipment over mountainous terrain.
The army plans to train a force of llamas to carry up to 100 kilograms of equipment and supplies, the sources said. They said this would ease the burden on troops and enable special operations forces to focus on combat or reconnaissance.
The sources said donkeys also participated in the Golan Heights exercise. They said the donkeys did not perform as well and required much more food than llamas. The llamas could be fed once every other day.

If I Wanted to Be A Popular Blogger With the Left
It's a pretty simple formula, really.
1. Turn conventional wisdom on its head. It's obvious to one and all that the Democrats don't have anything they stand for, other than opposing Bush. So when faced with this, claim that Republicans are the ones who have no principle other than supporting Bush:
Now, in order to be considered a "liberal," only one thing is required – a failure to pledge blind loyalty to George W. Bush. The minute one criticizes him is the minute that one becomes a "liberal," regardless of the ground on which the criticism is based. And the more one criticizes him, by definition, the more "liberal" one is. Whether one is a "liberal" -- or, for that matter, a "conservative" -- is now no longer a function of one’s actual political views, but is a function purely of one’s personal loyalty to George Bush.
2. Project the failings of the left on the right:
And the core emotions driving the Bush extremists are not hard to see. It is a driving rage and hatred – for liberals, for Muslims, for anyone who opposes George Bush.
3. Mention the unspeakable evil of the famous bloggers/columnists on the right:
And in that regard, people like Michelle Malkin, John Hinderaker, Jonah Goldberg and Hugh Hewitt are not conservatives. They are authoritarian cultists. Their allegiance is not to any principles of government but to strong authority through a single leader.
4. Vaguely indicate some personal conservative or non-liberal viewpoints without actually espousing them (Note: only effective when attacking other conservative viewpoints):
It used to be the case that in order to be considered a "liberal" or someone "of the Left," one had to actually ascribe to liberal views on the important policy issues of the day – social spending, abortion, the death penalty, affirmative action, immigration, "judicial activism," hate speech laws, gay rights, utopian foreign policies, etc. etc.
5. Make the Republicans sound like Nazis:
A movement which has as its shining lights a woman who advocates the death of her political opponents, another woman who is a proponent of concentration camps, a magazine which advocates the imprisonment of journalists who expose government actions of dubious legality, all topped off by a President who believes he has the power to secretly engage in activities which the American people, through their Congress, have made it a crime to engage in, is a movement motivated by lots of different things. Political ideology isn't one of them.

I'm Going to HillaryLand
Check out this article about Hillary's close-knit circle of advisors and friends (free registration required).
In contrast, Hillary's team likes bright lines, and one way they maintain them is by firmly establishing an in-crowd. Joe Lockhart, the White House press secretary and face of the Clinton administration for two and a half years? Out. (They suspect he's a John Edwards man, though an Edwards aide says he isn't.) James Carville? In. (He's personally close to Hillary and speaks to her regularly.) Doug Sosnik, one of Bill Clinton's senior strategists in the late '90s? Out. (He's advising former Virginia Governor Mark Warner.) John Podesta, Clinton's last chief of staff and now the president of the Center for American Progress? Way in. (He has important links to labor and environmental groups and serves as a policy conduit to Hillary.) Leon Panetta, Clinton's second chief of staff? Far out. (He clashed with Hillary and tried to keep Hillaryland at arm's length from the West Wing.) But trying to determine who's in and out is nothing compared with figuring out who's influential and who's not. That search takes you deep into Hillaryland.
There are very few Democrats whose central message is about interest rates, crime, productivity, and investor confidence. And the ones who exist have been hounded into silence in recent years by the Internet left. Hang out in Hillaryland long enough and you realize it has embraced almost none of the hyperpartisan culture of the so-called netroots that many Democrats are chasing. And the makeup of Hillary's core political consulting team suggests that's not going to change.
Terrific article, one that should make it clear that Hillary's not only running in 2008, but that she's probably got the Democratic nomination in the bag.

Maybe They Can Get Jerry Seinfeld as Their Spokesman?
Nancy Pelosi reveals the Democrats plan for 2006:
Ms. Pelosi of California, the House Democratic leader, did not dispute that argument. But, pointing to the Democratic strategy in defeating Mr. Bush's Social Security proposal last year, she said there was no rush.
"People said, 'You can't beat something with nothing,' " she said, arguing that the Democrats had in fact accomplished precisely that this year. "I feel very confident about where we are."

Say it! C-c-c-c-c-ulture of C-c-c-c-c-orruption!
I am going to have to start a category called COC for all these crooked Democrats. But remember what the libs say, this is a Republican problem!
Based on our reporting, the public record is now clear. The supposedly independent HVG, which was established by Agran’s best friend and top strategist, shared Agran’s campaign themes, contributors, staff, research, lawyers, printers, consultants and office space; raised nearly $1 million to pay for illegal mailers against Agran’s opponents; circumvented campaign-disclosure rules; lured a fake Republican into the 2004 race to steal votes from the legitimate GOP candidate; and threatened investigative reporters with legal action on Agran’s behalf. We have the councilman, unaware of Petracca’s looming revelation, saying—no, underscoring—that it would be illegal for any candidate to operate a slate mailer like HVG. We have Petracca acknowledging that Agran was secretive about his operation of HVG. And now we have the final piece of the crime: Agran’s own handwriting on HVG hit pieces.
Democrats are as pure as the driven snow!
