Hosannah!
The man who would reinstitute the draft will quit if the GOP retains the House...
Charles Rangel, the dean of New York's congressional delegation, said yesterday he'd resign his seat if Democrats don't take control of the House in November.
The Harlem Democrat, who would be in line for the chairmanship of the powerful Ways and Means Committee if his party hold the majority, told The Washington Post he'd leave office after 35 years if the Dems don't win.

Yeah, but will he keep his word? Sounds like all those leftie loons who promised to leave the country if Bush was elected -- and then re-elected -- and we're still stuck with 'em >:O

A moment of rational reflection on what would drive such a decision (hard for a couple of Republican propogandists I know, but please try) would tell you that that Rangel is likely giving the straight scoop on his intentions. With 35 years in the system, he has earned a nice retirement. As a representive of Harlem, he doesn't have to keep the seat warm to keep it from falling to the GOP, because a Republican couldn't get elected in Harlam if he went door to door handing out thousand dollar bills and free season tickets to the Knicks games. One thing that would be attractive to Rangel would be the opportunity to chair the most powerful committee in the House before he calls it career. He cetainly wouldn't have a chance to do so at all if he doesn't run in the fall, but since he won't know if there is a Democratic majority in the House until after the November election, it makes sense that he would defer his retirement plans until then. At that point, should the circumstances dictate retirement, he will simply step aside to be replaced by another, more youthful Harlem Democrat. As you say, Hosanah!! because there are still a number of Congressional districts that are automatic wins for the Dems.

I agree with you KeithS.
He is probably tired, but if given the opportunity to chair the ways and means committee he would stay for a few more terms.
The point of my post was to express the glee I would have for the retirement of a man who wanted to bring back the draft simply to create an anti-war backlash.
He's also a race-baiter, he's said outrageous things about Dick Cheney's health, he said Cheney was senile and other crap.
I am expressing the joy that would befall a lot of republicans and conservatives (and some democrats) when he retires.
It is no different than people (both Dems and Reps) who are rooting for McKinney's defeat).
