Should Moussaoui Live or Die?

The jury charged to make the decision whether or not Zacarias Moussaoui should receive the death penalty has decided he is eligible. Now they must hear testimony from 9/11 victim family members, those who will testify that he is schizophrenic and needs psychiatric help, and others before making the final verdict.

There are some who are opposed to the death penalty no matter what the circumstance. However, even among death penalty supporters, there is a question as to whether or not this man should be fried.

Some argue that we shouldn't waste our tax dollars keeping him alive. Others are saying if he is indeed put to death, we are only creating a martyr for Islamic fanatics to hold up as an example to others they hope to recruit to jihad.

I am among those who think he should be put to death -- both to keep our money from keeping him alive, and also because it would put an end to a very ugly chapter in the 9/11 saga.

However, there is another reason to impose the death penalty, and I heard it on the Mark Levin radio show on WABC Monday night. Levin believes that by keeping Moussaoui alive, we are simply giving him the chance to recruit jihad fighters in prison. (Sorry, I don't have a transcript, and I was listening in the car.)

Click here for information on how radical Islam has made headway here in the US in our prison system.

I'm interested in hearing other opinions on whether or not Moussaoui should receive the death penalty and why or why not.

I think the fuckhead should die, I just don't think the government should do it.

I don't believe his testimoney, either. I think he applied for the pilot's position and was turned down. I mean, who would put the Shoe Bomber on a delicate operation like that? Waaay to ugly.

Almost as bad looking as me, and my schnooooz is a mile long.

I don't see any reason why Moussaoui should get his 39 virgins any sooner than absolutely neccesary. The man testified against himself in order to get the death penalty and not die of old age in prison. Why should he be given what he wants?
And who is Moussaoui going to recruit in prision? People who are going to be under suspicion for the rest of their lives anyway. Exactly the kind of people you don't want for a clandestine operation.
I hope he lives a long time among sadistic guards and prisoners who know what he did and hate him for it. It won't be enough but it's better than sending him to his idea of paradise.

It'd be worth it if the families who might be interested could do it with a machete. I'm sure he'd be screaming for them to hurry up and get to to the virgins already. Or he could be drugged, and told he didn't make it to heaven.

Otherwise it's kind of a pointless political excersize.

I believe that Mosaic law allowed for the family members to determine the punishment because they were the ones that suffered the loss.

I am inclined to agree with IaintBacchus.

I am all for bringing back the concept of exile. We should get an island somewhere and exile people to it. They get a tent and some clothes and some food and there are food drops once a week and that's it.

I wonder about one part of your comment, IB, about the guards being sadistic. I am not trying to pick an argument, but doesn't the left decry the harsh interrogation tactics? What was all that talk about RUMSFELD authorizing toture and such nonsense.

I say we should build the towers back and every al Queda or accomplice sentenced to death should be taken to the top, set on fire and pushed off.

Why do you always devolve down to this simplistic Left/Right dicotomy?
I am against torture. And for one reason. It isn't, and has never been a good way to extract information.
That being said, and with the caveat that I also am not in favor of the way most prisons are run, I want this man to suffer. I recognize that prisons, even in the US, are nasty, brutal places to have to spend the rest of your life and in this case my dearest hope is that Mousaoui gets the very worst the system has to offer. I feel he's earned it, and given his religious convictions I find that a more appropriate punishment than death. There are a few times when rehabilitation is not an issue.
