Shame on Walgreens Pharmacy

This is just horrible:

A Florida woman is suing Illinois-based Walgreen Co. after reading notes on her prescription referring to her as "crazy" and "psycho."

Janey Karp, 53, of Palm Beach, has been fighting depression and anxiety with the help of medication, but was shocked to find a computer printout from her pharmacist with the insults.

In an entry dated March 17, 2005, the word "CrAzY!!" was entered in a field reserved for patient information. Another field from Sept. 30, 2004, stated: "She's really a psycho!!! Do not say her name too loud, never mention her meds by names & try to talk to her when ... ."

The remainder of the information was continued on another page, but was not included with the printout.

"I was devastated, humiliated and embarrassed," Karp told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "I honestly couldn't speak. I was trembling."

I want to know if it was staff or the pharmacist responsible for this. My money is on the staff.

I take anti-depressants and CVS people always ask, "what medication?" on top of my last name when I pick up my prescriptions. It doesn't bother me because I am not not embarrassed by it, but it still gets on my nerves because I know other people could get upset by it.

I heard Rush talking about this today, and a guy called in who used to work at a Walgreens. He said that it was common to place notes in a patient's profile because, as anyone who has worked in retail can relate to (and especially a pharmacy when you have people from all walks of life coming in for all kinds of meds), it's important for the store employees to know if a particular person has issues that might come up during a sales transaction. The caller also said he is sure that such comments were not meant for anyone but staff to see, and the fact that they were printed out must have been a computer glitch.

I can see where the caller is coming from. I worked in a pharmacy for some years, and I can tell you we had plenty of folks who we needed to tread very carefully with. Of course, I worked for an independent with a small staff who served people we came to know well, so such notes were not necessary. But in a big city pharmacy with big staffs and a large clientele, I can understand why these kinds of notes may be used.

Also, the only employees in a pharmacy who should be using the computer are the pharmacists and/or the technicians. Stockers and cashiers don't (and shouldn't) have access to them.

As for the woman who got the printout, well, I feel sorry for her. If such notes are used, they should be very generic. I have a feeling heads are going to roll over this one.

I do have to say that I feel retail service in general has gone downhill. I was taught to be friendly, courteous, and helpful -- even when the customers treated us like crap. Nowadays, finding a friendly salesclerk is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. Managers obviously aren't training employees in this very basic function, and it eventually will drive customers away. I know I stopped going to CVS because the service there was terrible. In the same vein, some customers are nightmares, and really need to step back and look at their own behavior.

I think it's a really terrible thing. I have actually had this happen to me. Not fun, and totally hurtful!

I worked at a Walgreens part time, and I can tell you first hand, the company is more interested in percentages than politeness and courtesy. Management is not was it used to be. They are not training them properly. I owned two companys, still own one, was in management for 25 yrs. I was actually told by a store manager that a cashier is not entitled to have an opinion about the way the store was being run. AN OPINION!!! I felt like I was living in Communist China!

And yes, no one but Pharmacy staff has acsess to those computers so it had to come from a tech or the pharmacist.

And you'd bet I'd say something to the store manager. Their district offices do not like complaints, too many law suits I guess....

I am currently a pharmacy student and I work for Walgreens part time. I have done internships at several other pharmacies and let me just say that, based on my experiences, the smaller pharmacies, like the grocery stores, are a lot worse at making comments about customers and so forth. At one pharmacy in particular, the technicians made a comment about almost every single customer that came in. At the Walgreens store that I work at we have a lot of respect for our customers and would never do something like that. Yes we deal with a lot of different people but we have to brush it off if they are not pleasant or make a scene.
