The 10 Most Damaging Books to Civilization

Human Events lists the 10 most damaging books to civilization in the last 200 years judged by 15 conservative figures are as follows:

10. General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, John Maynard Keynes, 1936

09. Beyond Good and Evil, Feidrich Nietzsche, 1886

08. The Course of Positive Philosophy, Auguste Comte, 1830-1843

07. The Feminine Mystique, Betty Friedman, 1963

06. Das Kapital, Karl Marx, 1867-1894

05. Democracy and Education, John Dewey, 1916

04. The Kinsey Report, Alfred Kinsey, 1948

03. Quotations from Chairman Mao (Moa's Little Red Book), 1966

02. Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler, 1925-1926

01. The Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels, 1848

I agree with the top four. But I would move Nietzsche from 09 to 05 and toss off 08 and replace it with How Capitalism Underdeveloped Black America, Manning Marable, 1983

Unlike the article, I encourage everyone to read these books to know thy enemy!

In the comments section a person writes, "SO, conservatives think guns aren't dangerous, but books are. Great." I don't know if he's being flippant or serious or what -- but it's a revealing comment. I infer he thinks that's crazy; I think it's perfect... [Read More]

SO, conservatives think guns aren't dangerous, but books are.

Great.

Paul, Happy Hour is just that: An hour. You need to cut back on your happy time, put the cocktail down, and step away from it.

Guns are safe. In the US there are less than a thousand accidental guns death per year. Compare it the forty thousand or so who die in motor vehicle accidents each year.

In complete contrast three of the great mass murdewrs of all time, Chairman Mao, Pol Pot and Joseph Stalin were motivated by Karl Marx.

So who has proven to be the great danger to the human popujation, Mxrx or the firwarm?

I suppose you think the invisible hand is better than everyone working together. What a scarry place your world would be.
I pat at least half of these authors on the back.

Every CEO who would rather line his pockets than help anyone out was motivated by... Adam Smith.... LETS BAN HIM?

Posted by: phil at June 14, 2005 08:06 PM

p.s they (CEO's) do even more harm. If you consider they controll not only our industries (ie: oil, food, clothing, etc) but they also controll our government. Todays Total Iraq CIVILIAN death toll.... 25,000
Afganistan 3,500 inocent bystanders
Guantanimo 750 detanies......15 actualy charged with something.

God bless Conservatism!

Phil -- your comments are juvenille at best. The CEO who "lines his pockets" manages something of worth which provides jobs, a source of revenue for the tax man (who wants to "help people"), and vibrancy to the community. Your idea of helping people might be handing out free drug needles; mine is providing employment. One might be done out of some misplaced altruism while the other occurs as a result of the pursuit of wealth -- but there's no question about which does society more good.

What a complete bullshit. Simplify much?

Anyone wonder why the conservatives think studying sexuality is so dangerous? More dangerous than communism!?

People should employ themselves through their talents, then we could get rid of money, the point system that creates all the opprutunites crime ever has to grow. Then people can live truly as they choose outside of a class or a state, becoming their own class/state, as it truly is when we remove the fictional viel of governmental authority and the made up value of money.
I'd like to see a book like that.
