NYT To Charge for Op-Eds?
So says this article.
I'm reminded of Michael Kinsley's comments a few years ago about Slate, that they were surprised to see how few people liked reading online. He went on to say that they were exploring charging for their content. Isn't that a terrific idea? Folks don't like reading online, but maybe they'll enjoy it if it costs them money?
I feel the same way about the Times. Paul Krugman isn't soul-deadening enough free that I should pay for the privilege of reading his dreck? I've been covering the NYT Op-Ed page here since the beginning of the year. Any interest in seeing me switch over to, say, the Washington Post?

It says home subscribers would already get it for free...but why would they go online to read what's being tossed on their doorstep each morning? I only read the stuff online because I refuse to pay for trash...so that'll be it for me, frankly.

I might have a solution for you...will email.

By trash, I assume you mean that you don't agree with their editorial policy. Stop being childish. Opinion/Editorial pieces are just that: Opinion.

So they are trying to get their readership even lower?

Yep...opinion. And my opinion is that I don't like it. If that's being childish, it's my prerogative. Why are you getting so upset about it? Since when do you care what I think? (BTW, there is the occasional piece I do agree with, but overall I don't.)

Pam,
I care about what everybody on this site thinks. If I wanted my own views echoed back to me I wouldn't be here.
But labling a whole newspaper trash because you don't agree with their editorial policy is childish. It's like my six year old daughter shouting that my wife is "rude" because she won't take her to the park. And I expect you're way to big to spank.

Personally, I don't think calling the op-ed page trash horrendously rude, considering all of the other words available to me. I don't usually swear online (I have used asterisks one or two times), nor do I disparage people (other commenters and posters) personally, as I consider that to be rude. (No, I am not accusing you of doing that.)
Recently, you praised Harry Reid for speaking his mind by calling President Bush a "loser." I thought he was rude. My calling the NYT op-eds trash is hardly along the same lines. You didn't expect Reid to apologize and he's a national figure, while I am just a slightly-less-than-anonymous blogger. No apologies here either.

Considering the pathetic coverage of the Times on WMD before the invasion of Iraq, calling it trash is right on the mark.
