Al Anbar Province

Here's your hot spot, sweet spot in stemming much of the turmoil in Iraq. Situated on the Syrian border, it may be the single most porous border for foreign terrorists making their way into Iraq. I predict the U.S. will spend a lot more of its time on these kinds of border operations while leaving many internal ops to the Iraqi security forces in the coming weeks. The largest and most desolate of provinces in Iraq, Al Anbar shares a long border with Syria and Jordan with relatively few cities and towns, populated mostly by rival, nomadic tribes; it resembles, in some ways, areas of Afghanistan in both terrain and local politics.
An excellent past article on the province from the Washington Times here.
