Hollywood Has a New Role...Blogging!

For those who may not have heard, socialite-cum-commentator (and former candidate for California governor) Arianna Huffington is starting a "superblog" that will feature none other than Hollywood's brightest minds...well, in their estimation, anyway.

The latest political genius to sign on to The Huffington Report is Warren Beatty (of Dick Tracy fame), whose sister Shirley MacLaine has the reincarnation thing down pat. Other featured contributors will include Senator Jon Corzine, David Geffen, Viacom co-chief Tom Freston, Barry Diller, Tina Brown and Gwyneth Paltrow. (Wow, Gwyneth Paltrow! Do you think she'll give advice on how to name your child?)

According to the New York Observer,

"I applaud the effort to tell the side of the story that Arianna Huffington seems to be engaged in," he [Warren Beatty] said. Mr. Beatty was all too aware, he said, of the power Mr. Drudge [Drudge Report] has to steer the American media.

"I would say he does a very industrious job of finding the things that he feels could be exploited to further the political agenda of the far right," said Mr. Beatty.

And...what? Does he think Huffington's site will be fair and balanced? Will he do his darnedest to tell both sides of whatever topic he decides to shower with his genius?

The partisan left has slowly been constructing outlets to counterbalance the partisan right’s perceived influence in radio and television (Air America; former Vice President Al Gore’s TV channel). Ms. Huffington, Mr. Beatty and Co., however, are aiming not at the margins but at the center of the media scrum: the news cycle itself, now being deftly nudged, goosed and spun by Mr. Drudge—daily, hourly, instantly.

Isn't having all of the mainstream news networks, most of cable, tons of magazines, major newspapers across the nation and the lion's share of the entertainment industry enough for these people? They want their greedy little fingers in every little pie!

Drudge, however, isn't worried:

Mr. Drudge observed that Ms. Huffington had "tons of charm and humor," but he questioned whether she and her powerful Hollywood friends had the stamina or wherewithal to keep up with him.

"This isn’t a dinner party, darling," he said. "This is the beast! This is the Internet beast, which is all-consuming, as anyone knows who works in this business."

My money's on Drudge. Unless they are willing to give 100%, I can't imagine Hollywood elitists clawing their way to the top of the Internet heap. After all, one must leave time for the good life, which celebs are very fond of living.
